quadrivial Listening to this really reminds me how much I miss Scott Miller. This is brilliant stuff, and it should have been the beginning of Game Theory's second chapter. As it is, I'm just grateful it exists.
Levrikon
Levrikon thumbnail
Levrikon I was skeptical about this, the first Game Theory album in...20 years? More? But it sounds like Scott Miller and company hadn't lost a step. Just beautiful cracked slightly strange '80s pop. Favorite track: No Love.
Craig O'Neill
Craig O'Neill thumbnail
Craig O'Neill A celebratory final chapter to a tragic story. Scott Miller's genius shines through each of these tracks, as does the love and respect he inspired in his posthumous collaborators.

ALL YOU NEED IS WHITE Miller/Schück The summer The song of the cicada The streaming of the data The cutting of grass into a row The summer The question is the summer The answer is the winter The answer is the freedom of the snow The summer The question is the summer The question Everyone’s looking, screening the headlines, Everyone's got something to find Oh we think about, watching out we’re fine already Oh we think about, finding out we know already Oh we think about, getting out we’re there already Know already Fine already The seller Is paying for the dollar The number dials the caller The customers choose the side of right The color The walls are every color Run into burnt sienna together But all you need is white The color The summer is the color The summer Everyone’s dealing, buying the headlines, Trading the one thing they need

Time Warner 03:18
TIME WARNER Miller Life Why don't you spend that with me? Time Come on and waste some in my daydreams Warner, warn me that there'll be no reprise Of how good Elektra's asylum seems Life What if you just let me live mine for yours Time That's what your emerald eyes freeze-frame Warner, warn me you've got to get love worthy now Got to burn with the brightest flame What was Joni What was Joni Mitchell saying in 1970, 1970 How will the rock critic break it on down? What was Neil What was Neil Young saying in 1970, 1970 How will the rock critic break it on down? What was John What was John Cale saying in 1970, 1970 How will the rock critic break it on down? They were saying how sad How sad if I didn't tell you How sad if you never knew How much it means being wit

AN OVERVIEW OF ITEM RESPONSE THEORY Miller/Schück You were right at the time There was no way to fail We allowed your jackknife But now we use a new scale You were not aware a choice was made You just surfed the wave that came I don’t know why I don’t know why I don’t know why--the Great Leap Forward To know if your life's worthwhile And I’m sorry you lose Listen to the chime Find the right new excuse For the place and the time The inflection points we talked about Are emotionally ranged

No Love 03:26
NO LOVE Miller/Mann Another con Another thing to make me long to be the Superman, the man of steel Who’s always on A creature strong enough to finally feel the things that you could never feel And baby you’ve got me there I want it to be true That you do it all for me and not for you No love no love no You only think you do No love no love no You ought to think it through No love because when it’s gone I’ll be crushed by the light I’ll be drawn into And now you see that no Valhalla’s Gonna pay you off in lovers who lose sleep at night ‘Cause you’re with me You used to say the streets you walked down while in love with me would glow with light And now they’re just streets again were you the last who knew That you don’t make it look that easy being you Show me what you need You will leave your nature lying on a careless window sill Cut your hair for when you go Leave none to deceive themselves they see the one I know. Show me what you want you do you want options on what you don’t want left open to you

VALERIE TOMORROW Miller/Stringfellow You better watch your way through the day, you can't will it away Benefits to aquarian pegs, this concept has no legs What if the edge you can't persuade will lend you crosses you can borrow ‘Cause oh she's my Valerie today and oh she's my Valerie tomorrow True to the valor that gave you your name, a strength that carries the pain Whether she wins or whether she feigns, cut out stars in shapes of flame She never worries what her pleasure seeking eyes will do with sorrow ‘Cause oh she's my Valerie today and oh she's my Valerie tomorrow You've got audacity well beyond the average capacity putting you on You've gotta carry the audience over the limits of reasonable tolerance When you begin in a war and you end even more in it that's the determinist intimist, man Oh she's my Valerie today You better watch it or will it away You'll never wonder what your pleasure seeking eyes will do with sorrow ‘Cause oh she's my Valerie today and oh she's my Valerie tomorrow In the equation of the absurd I'm just that much more of a girl I'm just that much more Oh she's my Valerie today and oh she's my Valerie tomorrow Valerie tomorrow She’s my Valerie My Valerie

Say Goodbye 04:02
SAY GOODBYE Miller/Gillard You’re in the world that you wanted And you never say “on second thought” anymore Who’s turning up on the sidewalk? Who’s gonna block the sun and ask anymore? Sorry baby, now you don't have the luxury Now that you've had a closer look at what you would change, and why What would you do with your second thought, say goodbye? What would you say you could have said? Because second thoughts say you yourself gotta leave Sorry, baby You changed your world and don't remember why Sorry sunshine, now it’s someone else's luxury to cry Say goodbye Now that it’s not a wish away, say goodbye. Sorry sunshine, but now you can't cry and you've got to leave What if you changed your mind? Say goodbye You’re in the world that you wanted And you never say “on second thought” anymore (you yourself gotta leave) Now that you're in the world you asked for, What would you change and why? What would you do with your second thoughts, say goodbye? What would you do with your second thought? Say goodbye

LAUREL CANYON Miller Where are they taking you tonight, Julie Ann? With some inspiring dream of doing better than all your school girlfriends Photographed on island shores Breezing in through hotel doors From which there will be no return How have they told you things will change, Julie Ann? That it’s a necessary evil Leaving me with all of life’s loose ends? And do they say leave bad and good With other things from your childhood They are no longer your concerns? Everywhere she turns Laurel Canyon burns and no one ever learns How many times will you be making your new start? Editing what you’ve been through line by line ‘til someone thinks it looks like art It may not have a truthful ring But one day you’ll give anything To get away from everything you’ve earned Maybe you just don’t see that you’re leaving me You’re leaving me Don’t you know they got you too easily Too easily too easily
9.
Kristine 04:14
KRISTINE Miller/Sheff Until you saw me, another life… Rain through sunlight. Tears on me on our climb, the sparkle in your eyes… I know that nothing is forever. I’m not surprised. The road to here was hard to miss I drove it like a long summer kiss. The way so clear, the earth outspins that axis where it’s set, and I can hear them saying, “Tell me what is really on your mind.” Kristine – the road takes what it needs and we’ll see where it leads when we’re there. Kristine, I’m only lost when you’re not there. I want a hit. I want you, miss. I want it without knowing what it is. Still, you can live, and you could whisper, off the mic, to someone who you’d like. Kristine – the road takes what it needs and we’ll see where it leads when we’re there. Kristine, I might lose direction, though with you I’m not lost anywhere. Hey, knowing what you know now, could you see from another angle? Though I was re-aligned and self aware – I was defiant, and self-reliant – I knew that I would have the final word, being with you is asylum. Every year with you is asylum They’re saying, “Tell me what is really on your mind.” Kristine – the road takes what it needs and we’ll see where it leads when we’re there. Kristine, I love you altogether. The road we’re on together only leads to where we belong.

BETWEEN THE BOTTLES Miller/Auer Girl I remember talking a blue streak Spinning such a web of predictions That would turn out all to be fictions to face And by the light of my former glories You learned the words to all my shadowy stories My repentance a slippery sentence to chase Now I’m between bottles of sunshine And you’re all that’s making me feel fine And girl I can last if I know once I’m past it you’re still mine Clouds don’t part when they’re thundering Wondering when it’s going to be alright And the skies won’t clear 'til they’re falling Calling me, when’s it gonna be alright? There’s nothing worse than thinking it’s better Think you’re getting warmer but it’s just wetter Surfing hard on a straight path to cleverness now Of all the seas in this solar system This floating boy’s in yours and only you could enlist him Rays of hope now, I’d like to kiss them and how But I’m between bottles of sunshine And you’re all that’s making me feel fine And girl I can last if I know once I’m past it you’re still mine And ain’t it a trip at the iceberg’s trip When you can’t see the frozen below? And remember when I couldn’t tell you And say all the answers to questions you already know? Clouds don’t part when they’re thundering Wondering when it’s going to be alright And the skies won’t clear 'til they’re falling Calling me, when’s it gonna be alright? Well I can’t believe we'll never relieve What’s so hard to perceive And it won’t be alright But the skies don’t clear 'til they’re falling Calling me when’s it gonna be alright? When’s it gonna be alright? When’s it gonna be alright? Yeah, when’s it gonna be alright?

ALWAYS JULIANNE Miller/Stringfellow Julianne In every night there's a day locked in moonlight telling the shore: Julianne Julianne Or was it the bit part of daylight flowing like hair through your hands You'll find us morning if anyone can Anyone's memory that plays against type is stronger than I deserve I can't call it anonymous anytime after I finally muster the courage Julianne The South Sea islands know waves' Midnight secrets: you know still more You'll find us morning if anyone can Of all the theories you gave when I first ordered logic to stand I'm forming predicate sentences straight from the light brigand Julianne Is the ball you dance In my memory lost in the air Julianne Julianne Was the introduction that brought you novel to where it began? Or some indispensable part of your plan? Was the soldier you coaxed back from battle scars weeping the death of love everlasting An essential etiquette forming the tension you rode into spring making idiots tremble but thinking they're singing? Julianne -- a far away cry one day wakes you shaking off laces of sand Julianne -- the best indentations of grace left by tracing your face with your hand We're all essential to part of your plan Julianne Julianne Some indispensable part of your plan You'll find us morning if anyone can

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIE Miller/Levy If I’m alit with candles, let them glow If I’m acast with darkness, let everyone know I’m bright with ideas that flicker and shine Dark as the shutters, and dumb as the blinds You’re not pretty anymore so don’t pray to that particular god He can’t hear the whoosh of your hair And he won’t listen to your vanity prayer Where were the voices when I needed to Find something fixable in you? I don’t blow in the wind like an answer I’m not singing for a-changing the times I go slow with the truth ‘cause I know It’s a wonderful lie I said “Lord do you reward what’s humble and true?” He said “Man, I don’t know, what would you do?” I’m afraid of Zen, that’s my pile of things to attach to That the wise old master is putting a match to Door to door bible sales to girls in pajamas As you give me the “Como se llamas” It’s your stake I take through my vampire religion You never knew you were its paradise vision This is only disappointment, God be praised My prize is noble but my spirit has not been raised It’s late to chime in, late to wonder how and why People change every day - you did, so could I Every time a bell rings It's just a fallen angel trying to sell me something
13.
Oh, Death 02:58
OH DEATH Miller/Leo Oh, Death, you will have your say But the place ain't here and the day's not today Sat at your bed; we spent four days inside They informed me the white count was high Late to arrive, I was first to be chided And latest in wondering why I'll only tell the children when the children have seen me cry But you know the look in my eye Oh, Death, you will have your say But the place ain't here and the day's not today An eye on my phone every time you’re alone Every time you drive down to the sea Our minds on a light that burned briefly but bright I should thank you for living with me Will mutual friends shore your fragments against Our ruin and their own decline? And will someone do it with mine? Oh, Death, you will have your say But the place ain't here and the day's not today Oh, Death, you will have your say
14.
EXIT FOR AN OPENING Miller/Schück I hide and my mother seeks But I’ll be there when she speaks I’ll come back under the sky When she feels the same sun as I on our cheeks I come and go with the breeze But I’ll be there when I please At school, I'm made for this age, I see the same place on the page as it seems Down the street And face down it down it down it What am I on the street for now? I hide and somebody seeks But I’ll be gone when she speaks I’ll be as glad that she came Although I have not heard that name now for weeks
15.
I STILL DREAM OF GETTING BACK TO PARIS Miller/Schück/Barbeau I still dream of getting back to Paris Don’t let me down cause I’m on the short list The slider in your head is fading from your iris I read in you as the book I just want to resist I don’t want to be a trigger on your fingertip I don’t want to be the light in your hair I don't want to ride your lifeless little guilty trip I don’t want to be the winner and the loser Cause the writer and the reader are there Oh no soft reading, Oh no keep hard seeing Oh no keep white ceilings Oh no pills and soaps are dripping down Running down going down Let me climb down I still dream of an escape in Paris So many years until we get to Rigel five The balance in your head is leading to Polaris Cherish the stars and shine like the sun when you drive I don’t want to be the glitter on your fingernails I don’t want to be the light in your hair I don’t want to weigh your life of happiness on scales I don’t want to be the joker or the dealer The spinner of the wheel unfair Oh no soft reading, oh no keep hard seeing Oh no keep white ceilings Oh no pills and soaps are dripping down Running down down going down down Let me climb down Down running down down going down down So sad to say goodbye So sad to say goodbye I still dream of an escape in Paris So many years until we get to Rigel five The balance in your head is leading to Polaris Cherish the stars and shine like the sun when you drive
